Frequently Asked Questions

Is PasswordClue a password manager?

No. It does not generate, autofill, connect to, or verify passwords. It stores exactly the clue text you choose to enter, so never enter an actual password.

Where are my clues stored?

Only on the original device. Username hints and clue layers are encrypted with AES-GCM. The encryption key is protected by the iOS Keychain and is not available to the developer.

Can I move or restore clues on another device?

No. PasswordClue does not sync, and its data is excluded from iCloud and computer backups. Clues must be recreated on a new device.

Can you recover a deleted clue or help if my device is lost?

No. Deleted clues are irreversible, and the developer has neither your database nor the encryption key.

Does PasswordClue collect my data?

No app data is collected or transmitted. PasswordClue has no account, app networking, analytics, ads, tracking, or third-party SDKs.

How do Face ID, Touch ID, and passcode protection work?

Enable Require Authentication in Settings. iOS performs device-owner authentication and chooses the supported method. PasswordClue never receives biometric data or your passcode. Passcode fallback helps avoid permanent lockout when biometrics are unavailable.

Why did a clue disappear again?

Revealed hints can automatically conceal after 30 or 60 seconds. The app may also lock after becoming inactive or after sensitive content is revealed, depending on Settings.

Can PasswordClue block screenshots?

No. Screen Recording Protection covers content while iOS reports active recording or sharing. iOS reports a normal screenshot only after capture, so screenshot prevention cannot be guaranteed.

Why did I not receive a review reminder?

Confirm notifications are allowed for PasswordClue in iOS Settings. Reminders are local, optional, and unavailable when permission is denied. Archiving or deleting a clue removes its pending reminder.

What does the unsafe-text warning mean?

On-device pattern detection found text that resembles an actual password. Edit the hint if possible. You may save anyway, but detection is advisory and cannot guarantee that all actual passwords are found.

Data deletion

Delete an individual clue from its detail screen, permanently delete an archived clue, or use Delete All Clue Data in Settings. That option removes every clue, associated local review notifications, and the clue-encryption key; appearance and other app preferences remain. Deletion is irreversible.

Accessibility

PasswordClue uses native SwiftUI controls and labels important actions for assistive technologies. If you encounter an accessibility issue with VoiceOver, Dynamic Type, contrast, motion, orientation, or layout, contact support with non-sensitive reproduction details.
