Navigation

Scroll Journal has three tabs:

  • Journal: record sessions, complete Daily Reflections, and browse previous days.
  • Creators: save informative or productive creators for later.
  • Insights: review weekly and monthly patterns and open the website, Privacy Policy, and Support page.

There is no separate Settings tab.

Recording sessions

How do I create a session?

Open the Journal tab and choose Add session. Select today or an earlier date, enter a platform, record the time spent, choose a reason, select your mood before and after, and add between one and three tags. Future dates cannot be selected.

How does platform entry work?

The platform field accepts any name up to 40 characters. When there is no history, Scroll Journal suggests IG, YT, YT Shorts, FB, and X. Previously entered platforms then appear as Recently used suggestions.

Common names are normalized: Instagram becomes IG, YouTube becomes YT, YouTube Shorts becomes YT Shorts, Facebook becomes FB, LinkedIn becomes LI, and X remains X. These suggestions and conversions happen locally; the app does not contact or authenticate with any platform.

What duration can I enter?

A session can last from 1 to 1,440 minutes. The stepper starts at 20 minutes and moves in five-minute increments, while valid values within the complete range can be recorded.

Which reasons are available?

Reply to someone, Learn something, Work or career, Check news, Planned entertainment, Relax, Fitness, Boredom, Habit, No particular reason, and Other. If you select Other, you must describe the reason.

Learning, work, replying, planned entertainment, relaxation, fitness, and checking news are treated as intentional for Insights. Boredom, habit, and no particular reason are treated as unintentional.

How does mood comparison work?

Select a mood from Very negative to Very positive both before and after scrolling. Scroll Journal compares the two values and labels the result Improved, Unchanged, or Declined.

How do I edit, move, or delete a session?

Tap a session to open it. You can update its information, move it to another non-future date, or choose Delete and confirm. Save and delete failures do not silently discard the existing record.

Tags

How many tags can a session have?

Each session requires one to three tags in total, including built-in and custom tags. Built-in choices include:

  • Positive: Intentional, Productive, Learning, Inspiration, Relaxing, and Connected with others.
  • Negative: Time lost, Distracted, Doomscrolling, Regret, Anxiety, Mentally tired, Sleep affected, Comparison, and Negative news.
  • Context: Habit, Boredom, Messages, Reels, Shorts, News, Work, and Entertainment.

How do custom tags work?

You can keep up to 50 reusable custom tags. Each name must contain 1–24 characters. Duplicate names are prevented without regard to capitalization, and built-in tag names cannot be duplicated.

Custom tags can be renamed or removed from the reusable catalogue. Historical sessions retain their original tag labels, and custom tags participate in Insight calculations.

Journal and previous days

Why do I initially see only two sessions?

The Journal tab initially shows up to two of today’s sessions to save vertical space. If more exist, use the control provided to expand or collapse the complete list.

What does weekly reflection progress show?

The seven-day row shows which days have completed reflections and the total completed during the current week.

What appears under earlier days?

A historical day appears when it contains at least one completed session or a completed Daily Reflection. Its card shows the date, session count, total recorded minutes, and a reflection preview or a note that no reflection was completed.

Opening the day shows its reflection, mood-outcome counts, tags and repeated-tag counts, and individual session details.

Daily Reflections and reminders

How do Daily Reflections work?

Sessions and reflections are separate records. You can write one Daily Reflection per day in response to “How did social media affect your day?” The response must contain 10–300 characters after surrounding whitespace is ignored.

When can I edit a reflection?

A reflection can be created or edited during the same day and until 12:00 PM local time the following day. After noon, that window closes. Editing an existing reflection updates its text while preserving its original completion time.

How do I enable or disable reminders?

Scroll Journal requests notification permission only after you select Enable reflection reminders. If the reflection remains incomplete, local reminders can be scheduled for 10:00 PM, 10:00 AM the next morning, and 11:30 AM before the noon deadline.

Remind Me Later schedules another eligible reminder about 30 minutes later without exceeding the deadline. Completing the reflection clears its related pending and delivered reminders. To disable reminders, open iOS Settings, find Scroll Journal under Notifications, and turn off Allow Notifications.

Weekly and monthly Insights

Why do Insights require at least three sessions?

Scroll Journal waits for at least three completed sessions in the selected period before presenting narrative patterns. Reflections alone do not generate session patterns. Period comparisons require at least three sessions in both periods.

What can Insights summarize?

Insights can summarize session count, average duration, intentional-use percentage, recording streaks, mood outcomes, completed and missed reflections, average daily minutes, average sessions per day, and the highest recorded-use weekday.

The daily average uses elapsed calendar days since your first tracked activity in the selected period, not only days containing sessions. Tied leading platforms are reported as a tie.

How are changes and patterns identified?

Positive observations can reflect repeated mood improvement, learning-focused sessions with positive mood changes, an average-duration decrease of at least five minutes, a decrease of at least ten percentage points in unintentional or lower-mood sessions, or fewer habit-based sessions.

Pattern observations can describe a uniquely common reason used at least twice, repeated tags, mood-outcome counts, boredom, habit, or purposeless sessions followed by lower mood, repeated platform declines, or longer sessions associated with distraction, regret, time lost, or doomscrolling. A single negative session does not produce a platform-level claim.

Depending on the recorded evidence, a gentle focus may suggest setting a limit for boredom-driven sessions, deciding on a purpose first, noticing bedtime scrolling, favoring helpful learning sessions, or paying attention to how a reason affects mood.

Are Insights produced by AI?

No. Insights use deterministic calculations on your device. They are not produced by an AI model, sent to an external service, or intended as medical, psychological, diagnostic, therapeutic, or professional advice.

Creator Library

How do I save a creator?

Open the Creators tab and add a creator name or @handle. That is the only required field. An optional disclosure section lets you add a screenshot, profile link, and personal note.

How are creator screenshots handled?

Scroll Journal uses the iOS Photos picker and receives only the image you select. Large images are resized to a maximum dimension of 2,400 pixels, converted to JPEG, and stored locally. You can replace or remove the screenshot.

How do profile links work?

Profile links are optional. Scroll Journal accepts HTTP or HTTPS links, adds https:// when appropriate, rejects unsupported or unsafe URL schemes, and opens the link externally when you choose Open creator page. It does not download creator profiles or retrieve data from social-media APIs.

How do I find, edit, or delete a creator?

Creators are ordered by most recently updated. Search can match names, existing handle and platform metadata, notes, and existing topic metadata. Open a creator to edit or delete it.

Deletion requires confirmation and removes the creator’s locally stored screenshot, link, note, and associated metadata. It cannot be undone inside the app.

Privacy and local data

Where is my information stored?

Sessions, reflections, moods, reasons, session tags, creator records, creator screenshots, profile links, notes, and creator metadata are stored locally using SwiftData. The reusable custom-tag catalogue is stored locally using UserDefaults. Insights are calculated locally from this data.

When does Scroll Journal use the internet?

Only when you choose to open a saved creator link, the Scroll Journal website, the Privacy Policy, or this Support page. Journal and creator data are not transmitted to those websites.

What happens if I delete Scroll Journal?

Removing the app deletes its locally stored application data from that iPhone, subject to backups independently managed by iOS. Scroll Journal does not operate its own cloud backup or recovery service, and the developer cannot restore your private journal.

Does Scroll Journal connect to social-media accounts?

No. It does not sign in to social-media services, call their APIs, read browsing history, monitor Apple Screen Time, or automatically detect activity. Every session is entered manually.

Read the complete Scroll Journal Privacy Policy.
